This area became the first in Vancouver with high-rise apartment buildings. The area is now made up of a mix of older three or four story apartment buildings and co-ops, apartment and condo towers, a handful of town-homes, and a handful of newer condo buildings. The beauty of this area is that it is located on the South West side of the city. It is close to the beaches on the south side of the downtown peninsula (Sunset beach & English Bay). To the west of the West End is Stanley Park – a huge forest with hiking trails, a perimeter boardwalk or “Seawall” including a walking and bike/blade path.
This neighborhood is traditionally the gayest area of the city – and here you will find most of the gay bars, restaurants and shops on or close to Davie and Denman Streets.
Having said that, the neighborhood is quite mixed, and includes folks from all walks of life, including retirees, young families, and just about everything in between.
Demographic Information:
Home to 42,120 people in 2001. 31.5% of residents are between 40 and 65, with 51% being between 20 and 40. The share of single-parent families in the West End is about 12%, compared to 17% for the City of Vancouver. Statistics also show that the West End is home to many children — the downtown peninsula now has more children than traditional family neighborhoods such as West Point Grey or Kerrisdale.
