Gastown is very cool.
This is the city’s original downtown – and is today a tourist attraction, and a really funky place to live. Here you’ll find buildings built around the turn of the century that have been converted into fantastic loft spaces with all the things you’d expect from turn of the century buildings. Exposed wood beams, brick walls – in an area characterized by cobblestone streets, brick sidewalks… teeming with restaurants, bars, and all sorts of really cool shops. This area tends to house a mix of yuppies with an edge, and the artistic type.
Again, this area like Downtown Northeast it is located close to the “Downtown Eastside,” so problems associated with vagrants/homeless, and so on are not far away – but they do seem to keep out of the heart of Gastown for the most part – sticking to their own area by and large.
Parking is a challenge here, both for residents and visitors alike. That is what happens when you are living in buildings that were constructed before the mass production of the automobile… parking can be found in local garages not far from the areas residential buildings. Some buildings do have parking.
Some of the homes in this area boast some spectacular views of the North Shore mountains, and the Burrard Inlet. Funky and truly distinct from the rest of Vancouver is the best way to describe this neighborhood due to its heritage and its eclectics group of residents.
